On paper, the Canon EOS C200 seems to solve everything a lot of the problems that have prevented DSLR and C100 users from moving to the C300 mkII. The EOS 2000D is Canon’s latest entry-level model, replacing the similarly affordable EOS 1300D. My sourse is a friend who just attended Cinegear in LA and thats what he asked Canon at the show, and that is what they told him. One alternative brand, EgoDisk, has popped up and claims it achieves that minimum speed rating as well, and it’s half the price of the others. I filmed myself with the URSA Mini 4.6K there. Thanks for a great review! The menu look has changed considerably, but overall we became familiar with it fairly quickly. We white is clipping fairly quickly and the roll off isn’t that great. Or maybe the CMOS chip has been changed. The C200 with CLog2 looks to be at a legitimate 15 stops. You had all the time in the world, and yet somehow you still failed. 8bit or 10bit? I figure, the EVF is outrageously expensive, so scratch that. I have read about that, but not confirmed it with Canon yet. Very useful informations! I was told that Adobe apps will support CRM natively in the near future too. The size is just right, ND’s and it was sharp and precise. Some people are saying the Ursa Mini, well the URSA is in my estimation 2.5 times as heavy and cumbersome and we were playing with both today, The C200 maybe the camera for documentaries. If they do i will buy it but i’m afraid they don’t cause the c300mars2 owners !! The C200 uses the same batteries as the C300 mkII, which is great if you shoot with both cameras. This is why it can and often does increase usable dynamic range in your files. Otherwise they aren’t comparable in sharpness. The Canon EOS C200 and C200B are designed to combine entry-level ease of use with high-end features, 4K video, and a new image processing system. Touchable dual pixel autofocus means you can use it on a number of gimbals, and simply touch the screen to focus, rather than having to figure out how to attach the hand grip to the gimbal, or rig up remote follow focus and monitoring accessories. With the C200, you have to be a lot more careful with getting everything right. Not to mention the terrible form factor of Canons. For us, we’re looking forward to cards becoming cheaper and cheaper, just as storage drives become cheaper for more space. I was looking at 3-year old footage with my C100 and 5D and it looked amazing in comparison. And indeed, the RAW from the C200 is similar to the RAW from the 5D3 ML, which I’ve also worked with. But we used the C200 only in its 4k UHD MP4 mode. But if you’ve promised a client high quality RAW footage, you won’t be able to get away with providing them a low quality proxy file. If you know this kind situation, then you know that the leaves under the tree should be very dark and the spots where the sun hit the wet leaves should be very overexposed. Why? Unfortunately the stock monitor cable is too short, having to uncomfortably stretch in order to reach the monitor. Hi Sebastian, do you know if the camera C-log will be available through sdi and hdmi ports? The top of the body has two 1/4-20” threads, so you can decide whether to place it closer to the front or back of the camera. If they would enable an HD/2k raw lite option in camera (full sensor) purchasing this cam would be a no brainer. So what about the Canon C200B? The C200, however, not only has 4k mp4 recording and C-log, it also has the newer Clog2 and Clog3 flavors, using the same exact CMOS sensor as the C300 mkII. RAW was what most people were interested in regarding the Canon C200. There are HDMI and SDI outputs, and it uses the same batteries as the C300 mkII but comes with a more portable single battery charger. So you’d have to record everything RAW 4k and then transcode to ProRes. Later, a Canon representative showed me that the brightness can be dialled up in the menu. Now there are 5 internal filters, which is a big deal. Has anyone seen or said anything about being able to adjust ISO in post with the Cinema RAW Light? So theoretically, the images should look nearly identical. You can't set UHD 150mbps MP4 as your proxy resolution. On a sunny bluebird day, the images look good across the board, with most lenses. In just about any ugly condition, the C300 mkII makes the image shine. At one point, our C300 mkII was being used for our subject interview, and the C200 was taken off the gimbal so that one of us could shoot non-specific slider shots in a different part of the shooting location. It’s false economy. That could be the ticket, although it may be a little heavy for one handed operation. First off, the C200 hasn’t really been put out into the world yet, so we don’t know yet. And now that the XLR inputs are in the camera body, you can pair the C200 with the external monitor/recorder of your choice, without building up an excessively complex interview rig. In interviews as well, being able to touch the screen to ensure your subject is in focus from time to time, is so comforting. Review Canon C200. The main issue with the monitor - as has been reported by many early C200 users - is not the monitor itself, but the over engineered monitor mount that comes with the C200. We’re terrible, unprofessional shooters who don’t know what we’re doing and are not properly utilizing the camera the way its intended to be used. Maybe it’s the 8bit 4:2:0, or the lens we used, who knows, but it just doesn’t pop like the C300II does. Reliability. I’m taking my guesses on the C200 from my C300 mkII tests, which has basically the same sensor. We rented the Canon EOS C200 from LensRentals, for a fast-paced week of production in multiple cities. Shoot us an email if you have any questions or comments. With a tap of the touchscreen you can direct your focus to the right part of the picture. Will wait for Canon’s approval on this one. The Canon Cinema EOS C70 is Canon’s first Cinema camera with an RF mount (which in turn means being able to use the amazing RF lens lineup). But it’ll sell to Canon fan boys until they lower the price. GH-5 lacks built in ND filters, XLR audio is not integrated, GH-5 AF is lacking, C200 has Canon’s DPAF with Face Tracking and works very well. One of the big benefits to having DPAF will be to fly the camera on a gimbal. Thankfully the C200 user experience is pretty similar to the C100/C300 that we’re very comfortable with. For this C200 review I spent a couple of hours putting the new camera through the elements, ranging from harsh sunlight, to strong wind and eventually pouring rain. This is where Cinema RAW Light becomes more than a codec, and instead a malleable format within your NLE that allows for seamless creation of different compliant passes easier than ever before.”, Link: http://www.learn.usa.canon.com/resources/articles/2017/eos-c200-post-production-brief.shtml?categoryId=22. Great Review.. i hate logs , it’s a placebo for people who want raw but cannot afford it….And i didn’t say it’s the same image of a 5d i said “you can achieve a very similar image/color/feel”, so if you can’t you don’t know how to use a 5d, so this camera is not for you either…….. Doesn't it seem a little unlikely that these kinds of productions would choose an amped up C100 for their A cam? Fully Compatible with New and Existing CANON EF-Mount Lenses. I came to all of these cameras from the my BVWD-600, then DBeta, then the Sony F900, then original Varicam and then began to downsize to smaller shoulder mount cameras as I had to travel a lot more, like the HPX300 but I never warmed to 1/3″ sensors. Thanks for the review. So it’s up to you, whether you trust the big name brands, or you believe in user reports, or you buy into official recommendations. For Canon Cinema EOS Mk I users I would see the C200 as a very good upgrade, but if I have to still use an external recorder to get a better codec I might have to look elsewhere. Do you get one large size and use step-up filters for all your smaller lenses? I hope they make the right move. The grading experience was very pleasing and of course I could easily control colours, while getting an overall organic look. Great for Photos but lousy for video. Plenty of good work being done with them but not what a pro generally wants in a video camera in most cases. There’s internal MP4 recording on an SD card, up to 60fps in 4K UHD, at 4:2:0 and 150mbps. But worst of all, the majority of our hard drive space and computer processing power for editing is almost exclusively tied to the interview shot. . Did you shoot in Raw or the regular codecs? And we already had all the lenses we needed. But for videographers who either have a C300 mkII or are interested in getting one, then it becomes a more difficult argument. Canon provides a list of supported media, so just stick to it and you’ll be safe. The conversion in both DaVinci Resolve 14 Beta and the Canon Cinema RAW Development tool took a little under 30 minutes for 16 minutes of footage on an 8-core Mac Pro. is it possible to Use adobe camera raw With the c200 raw files ??! It does 4k raw and has a good mp4 codec if i’m not mistaking. Which, of course, defeats the whole purpose of having internal RAW recording. I don’t know unfortunately, but I’d prefer to use Cfast than a solution like this. C series is pretty much most affordable in the content /doc style market. Even though the resolution is only HD, those HD images are quite good. CFX600 or CFX650? Shame that in UK it cost 7700£ -> 9863.70$ :-/. Canon S200 for Portrait Photography Canon S200 has a score of 38 for Portrait Photography which makes it a POOR candidate for this type of photography. If you shot in Raw, were you able to playback the files on your computer? The Canon C200 made a significant departure from the C100 in its modularity. Please test both cameras first and comment on such conclusions after that. Both the LCD screen and EVF are much improved in their resolution and clarity (over the C100). I think it is unlikely that the aliasing is firmware related, but it should be mentioned none the less. On a several year old Macbook, we’ve heard reports of it taking all night to transcode one 16 minute clip. Canon C200 Review - Impressive RAW Footage & Ergonomics For Little Money. If you’re coming from TV, maybe this camera is not for you, as it is targeted at users who intend to use it for cinematic applications. Any chance to share an actual RAW file, not the transcoded video? As I mentioned earlier, there is some aliasing and moiré in 120p slow motion recordings. For many this will not be viable, because they simply need to record too much footage or they don’t have the extra processing power and time required to work with RAW. $2,000.00 versus $7,500.00 Prosumer versus pro. I must have missed something, where is the link to the RAW footage? As such, if RAW is not used to its full potential, it may not be beneficial to many users like documentary and event shooters, for whom RAW alone may not be a good selling point. And we have to be honest here, the image is not nearly as similar as we had hoped. Add to that the fact that this camera offers the best auto focus any cinema camera currently has to offer, face detection, the convenient focus assist feature, great low-light qualities and a rugged, reliable, ergonomic body with up to 10 stops of built-in ND. But you can change all the values (white balance etc…) in Da Vinci or you still need Cinema RAW Development ? Does the cable going from the screen to the camera ever get in the way of the lens? Not only is it bulky, but if you have it placed at the front of the top handle, any time you press on the monitor to use the touch AF, the whole camera shakes a little. The dynamic range on the C200 is good and the highlight rolloff isn’t Alexa, but certainly closer to it than a lot of other cinema cameras under $10k. We are working filmmakers, not armchair bloggers. Here is our extensive Canon C200 Review. Nice review Sebastian, although not sure where you are getting that the cost is $5,000.00? cinema5D GmbH, Kranzgasse 22/9-10, A-1150 Vienna, Austria, MTF Services Converts SIRUI 50mm and 35mm Anamorphic Lenses to L-Mount, TDM Audio Pro UVC Case Disinfects Your Microphones, GoPro Karma Drone - Controller Pairing Issues, Boris FX Mocha Pro 2021 adds PowerMesh Tracking, MZed Course Review – The Art & Technique of Film Editing with Tom Cross, Panasonic LUMIX BGH1 First Look Review & Mini Documentary, Astera NYX Review - The Quest for the Perfect Cinema Lightbulb, http://www.learn.usa.canon.com/resources/articles/2017/eos-c200-post-production-brief.shtml?categoryId=22, Smaller file size with “Cinema RAW Light”, Up to 120fps in HD with full sensor readout, Advanced Dual Pixel CMOS Auto Focus with touch screen and face detect. Note that the Ursa Mini 4K has no rolling shutter, but the 4.6K does have it. This camera on a gimbal just makes sense. A couple years ago we moved to the C300 mark II and it continues to amaze us.
